Kenya : Who were the Nairobi Westgate attackers.

Published on Sep 24, 2013
A British woman is thought to be among militants who killed at least 62 people at a Kenyan shopping centre, the country's foreign minister has said.

Her comments have fuelled speculation about the possible involvement in the attack of British terror suspect Samantha Lewthwaite - the widow of 7 July suicide bomber Germaine Lindsay.

She is known to be in East Africa and is wanted by Kenyan police over alleged links to a terrorist cell that planned to bomb the country's coast.

But government officials have advised caution when it comes to Ms Lewthwaite's possible involvement in the Nairobi Westgate shopping complex attack.

This British Muslim Woman 'White Widow' Is Behind The Kenyan Mall Bombing

Police Believe

Last night, as the bodies were still being counted at the Kenyan shopping mall, Kenyan anti-terror police have revealed that a 29 years old lady Samantha Lewthwaite- who is known to many as the White Widow - may be the brains behind the operation to bring terror to the heart of Kenya.

This is coming as survivors have described how a woman in a veil appeared to be commanding the
other terrorists as they hunted down and killed non-Muslim shoppers.

Samantha Lewthwaite, the daughter of a former British soldier grew up as a normal teenager in Aylesbury before meeting Jermaine Lindsay, a British Muslim, in an online chat room when she was 17.
The pair married three years later and views these awful killings as a cause for jubilation.

Having converted to Islam as a young woman and married a man who went on to be a 7/7 London suicide bomber, she has become a key figure in the terror group behind this weekend's attack.

When her husband was named as one of four suicide bombers who blew up Tube trains and a bus in 2005, killing 52 people, Lewthwaite initially condemned her late husband's attack and denied any knowledge of his plan.
More than eight years later, Lewthwaite is one of Al Qaeda's main recruiters in East Africa and is an official spokesman for Al Shabaab (The People), the terrorist group behind the horror in Nairobi

Known to her devoted followers as dada muzungu -- Swahili for white sister -- Lewthwaite moved to Kenya with her three children in 2007.
Lewthwaite has even been involved in training a group of all-female suicide attackers at camps in lawless neighbouring Somalia.

Samantha Lewthwaite responsible for Kenya mall attack?

A British terror suspect, known as the "white widow" for her marriage to one of the 2005 London suicide bombers, may have been involved in the attacks on a Nairobi mall.

Reports that the body of a white woman terrorist had been recovered in the aftermath of the massacre at a Kenya mall over the weekend sparked rumors that the wanted terror suspect Samantha Lewthwaite was involved in the attack.
Lewthwaite is known as the "White Widow" for her marriage to Germaine Lindsay, one of four bombers who blew up three subway trains and a bus in the July 2005 bombings that killed 56 people in London. She is wanted by Kenyan officials on terror charges.
A senior officer in the Kenyan intelligence source said video footage from the attack at Westgate mall in Nairobi showed a white woman taken part. Later another Kenyan intelligence officer and two soldiers claimed a white woman was among the dead al-Shabaab terrorists.
A shop owner who was inside the mall claimed she also saw a white woman among the attackers, and said she had pointed a gun at a shop assistant.
Foreign Office and British intelligence agencies said they "could not rule out the possibility that Lewthwaite... was involved," but had no specific evidence pointing to her Monday.
Lewthwaite, who has been on the run in East Africa for more than two years, was fingered by Kenyan police after the discovery of a fake passport bearing her photograph in a house linked to known terrorists. She has been charged in absentia with planning attacks in Kenya in 2011, including on venues popular with Westerners.
Sources at British agencies said they were also investigating the potential involvement of a man called Abu Omar, an English speaker who may be British, who has acted as spokesman for the Somali al-Shabaab terrorist group since the attacks began Saturday.
Two other Londoners, Liban Adam, 23, and Ahmed Nasir Shirdoon, 24, were named as attackers by the now-defunct Twitter account that claimed to speak for al-Shabaab.
While military and police forces were still clearing the mall overnight Monday, at least 68 people had been killed and some were still being held hostage.

White widow claims intensify amid reports a white woman terrorist was killed in Kenya attack

The prospect that British terror suspect Samantha Lewthwaite was involved in the Kenya massacre intensified amid reports the body of a white woman terrorist had been recovered.

A Kenyan intelligence officer and two soldiers each claimed one of the al-Shabaab terrorists who had been killed in the Westgate attack was a white female.
Earlier, a senior Kenyan intelligence source said video footage from within the complex did show a white woman among the attackers.
He said she was actively involved and believed to be British.
The Foreign Office and British spy agencies have already said they cannot rule out the possibility that Lewthwaite, who is the widow of 7/7 suicide bomber Germaine Lindsay, was involved but there was no evidence at this stage.
However, a senior Whitehall source said that it was likely it will emerge that a woman of non-African descent and possibly Caucasian was among the killers.
A shop owner in the Westgate complex also claimed a white woman pointed a gun at one of her assistants.
Lewthwaite, who is already wanted in Kenya on terror charges, has been dubbed the “white widow” because of her links to Lindsay, who blew up an underground train at King's Cross in 2005, killing 26 people.
The UK spy agencies and counter-terrorism police are also investigating an English speaking spokesman for the Somali-based al-Shabaab who has defended the actions in mainstream media who appears to be British.
Abu Omar carried out a series of phone interviews insisting there would be no negotiations with the group, who has taken hostages in the centre.
Two years ago a man calling himself Abu Omar and claiming to be British appeared in a newspaper feature helping distribute food from al-Shabaab at a Somali refugee camp.
A now-defunct Twitter account said to speak for al-Shabaab claimed on Sunday that a Liban Adam, 23, and Ahmed Nasir Shirdoon, 24, both from London, were among the Westgate killers but it has not been possible to verify.
Lewthwaite is already suspected of plotting to attack venues popular with Westerners such as shopping centres and hotels in Kenya and has been on the run in East Arica for almost two years.
She has been charged by the Kenyans in her absence of being part of a terror cell, which allegedly involved other Britons, that planned attacks in the country in 2011.
She has been regularly linked with al-Shabaab.
Kenyan Interior Minister Joseph Ole Lenku insisted that reports a woman was involved in the Westgate attack were wrong and that some of the male terrorist has dressed up as women to get in to the complex.
However, an intelligence source there signalled as yet unpublished CCTV footage reveals the opposite.
Three other sources, an intelligence officer and two soldiers, told Reuters that one of the killed attackers was a white woman.
State House spokesman Manoah Esipisu said that "nothing is being ruled out" concerning Lewthwaite's possible involvement.

Is White Widow Samantha Lewthwaite dead? Woman terror suspect killed as troops storm Nairobi shopping centre

Investigators are trying to identify the body of a white woman found among the Islamic militants killed as troops stormed the complex
Prime suspect: Samantha Lewthwaite
Daily Mirror
The British terrorist dubbed the White Widow may have been shot dead by Kenyan soldiers after the Nairobi mall massacre.
Investigators are trying to identify the body of a white woman found among the Islamic militants killed as troops stormed the complex.
And there were claims that it could be fugitive mum-of-three Samantha Lewthwaite, from Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.
Experts believe she helped plan the bloodbath and may have been part of the masked gang that slaughtered 62 shoppers, including six Brits.
An intelligence source said: “Lewthwaite is the most wanted female terrorist in the world.
"She has managed to evade capture for two years but she may have finally been killed.”
The source added that Lewthwaite may have plotted the slaughter with the al-Shabaab terror group in revenge for the capture of her right hand man.
She had allegedly planned to bomb Kenyan beach resorts with London-born Jermaine Grant. Police swooped on the pair at their Mombasa home in December 2011 – but Lewthwaite escaped and has been on the run ever since.
Chemicals found in their rented apartment were identical to the ingredients Lewthwaite’s former husband Jermaine Lindsay used to kill 26 people and himself in the London 7/7 attacks.
Grant, 31, was today due to stand trial for the planned atrocities but prosecutors in Mombasa dramatically halted the hearing as it emerged Lewthwaite was a prime suspect in the Nairobi atrocity.
One senior security official said that despite the reports of her death, many believed Lewthwaite was still at large.

He added: “We are dealing with a very fast moving target. Everything is being done to locate her.
“She is an al-Shabaab lieutenant and has used her influence to bring bloodshed to Kenya. The timings of this attack is very sensitive.
“We are fully aware of her links with Jermaine Grant, who will be brought to justice just like those who have brought carnage to our streets.”
Grant, from Newham, East London, failed to appear in court in Mombasa today.
Previous court hearings have heard how Lewthwaite plotted an armed operation to free him using similar tactics to those employed by the Westgate shopping centre terrorists.
Jacob Ondari, the deputy public prosecutor, told Mombasa magistrates in March: “I pray that this case be moved to Shanzu courts within the prison premises for the sake of the court’s security.
"There are intelligence reports indicating that there are plans to rescue the first accused from the prison.”
Mr Ondari said one man linked to the operation was recently arrested in Mombasa with a grenade.
Another was stopped crossing into Kenya from Tanzania with bullet-proof vests and face masks.
As a result, the trial, at which six Scotland Yard anti-terror officers are due to testify, was moved to “safe” court inside the grounds of a high security jail.
Today’s hearing was adjourned after Mr Ondari mysteriously failed to show up at court.
The case is due to resume tomorrow.
As the bloody siege in Nairobi entered its third day, officials said the death toll could double after it emerged that at least 63 are still missing.
Six Britons were killed and children as young as two are among the 175 injured. Kenyan officials confirmed that three terrorists had been killed and more than 10 suspects arrested.
Eleven Kenyan soldiers have been wounded in running gun battles.
The attackers still held at least 10 to 15 hostages tonight.

A number of others were freed after troops launched a major assault on Sunday night.
Huge explosions and machine gun fire echoed around the area and a huge plume of smoke hung over the building today amid reports that the terrorists were trying to burn it down.
Police helicopters swooped overhead sparking rumours – later denied – that one of the gunmen had escaped.
As troop reinforcements and armoured personnel carriers arrived on the scene, the terrorists’ supporters sent a defiant message to the world.
Al- Shabaab spokesman Ali Mohamud Rage said on an Islamist website that the remaining hostages would “bear the brunt of any force” used against them.
He added: “We authorise the mujahedeen inside the building to take actions against the prisoners as much as they are pressed.
“We are telling Christians advancing onto the mujahedeen to have mercy for their prisoners.”
A makeshift hospital was set up by the Kenyan Red Cross in a car park near the mall.
The terrorists were believed to be holed up with their hostages on the third floor of the four-storey mall following a series of gun battles.
They threatened to start executing hostages if the troops did not back off.
Downing Street sources said last night it was not known if any more Brits were caught up in the siege.
They also declined to comment on reports that White Widow Lewthwaite may have been a part of the terror gang.
One insider said: “We believe most of those caught up in the attack were long-term Kenyan residents just going about their everyday lives.
David Cameron broke off from staying with the Queen at Balmoral today and returned to London to chair a meeting of the Government’s Cobra crisis committee.

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said: “We’re in close touch with the Kenyan authorities and stand ready to provide them with any additional assistance they require.”
Asked about reports that Britons may have been involved in the planning the attack, Mr Hammond replied: “I’ve seen those reports but there’s no evidence to support those claims.”
He added: “We have been in touch with the Kenyan authorities and have excellent lines of communication with them.
“As the Prime Minister has made clear, we will provide them with any assistance which they request.
"We maintain continuous contact with the Kenyan authorities and with our own diplomatic post in Nairobi.”
Barack Obama said he was appalled by the massacre and pledged that the US would do all it could to help Kenya.
He added: “We stand with them against this terrible outrage.”
He was speaking during a meeting with Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan in New York, where they were attending the United Nations General Assembly.
Both expressed their condolences to Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, who today revealed he lost members of his family in the attack.
Mr Jonathan said: “I feel the pain of President Kenyatta… terror anywhere is terror on all of us.”

Subject: WESTGATE FIASCO NOT OVER YET

Have been listening keenly to KTN 1.00PM lunch time bulletin , and it looks contradictory with the Kenyan population belief, that indeed the Westgate mall is not yet entirely occupied by KDF.
Today's early morning clearing operation saw some fire at the mall which security personnel dismissed as mattresses burning!!!! The clearing was targeted to be about for two hours but until now the work continues!!. Sporadic gun fire could be heard in and around the building even by 11.am this morning.
KTN bulletin has insisted that it will only be over when the CIC of the armed forces(mr. president) finally digs in and confirms full control in the building, identifying who are the killed terrorists, terrorists actual number (not between 10-15), total number of official deaths and if there were any hostages managed to be saved by the KDF bloody intervention, whether or if THE WHITE WIDOW was among those 6 killed in the final run in, to which none has yet been done as they were reading the news.
It seems the long wait not yet over, but not for very far either.

We must refuse this business of we are one #WeAreOne.
It clouds our capacity to demand for answers.
The terrorists never intended to divide us.Their mission was to destroy us.Let us demand for answers to ensure we are secure and our homeland security is sound. On this #WestGate crisis,we must refuse to merely sing "We Are One" and let those who slept on the job go Scot free.It is a corrupted version of Accept and Move on!
If the government has failed to unite the country they form a song where everyone is required to sing along without answers,,where was Gichangi, where was our intelligence system.
Does Jubilee intend to fool Kenyans that we are now one because of a created crisis?

Detectives put Westgate Shopping Mall tenants on spot as investigation takes new turn

Updated Tuesday, September 24th 2013 at 00:07 GMT +3

Family escape from Westgate Mall during the 2013 SEPTEMBER 21 terror attack in Kenya
By CYRUS OMBATI
Detectives want to talk to all tenants of the Westgate Shopping Mall as part of efforts to trace terrorists who attacked it.

This comes amid speculation some of the attackers could have been tenants at the mall.
They had hired shops at the mall to help them map it and plan well in readiness for the assault.
“That is one of the theories we are pursuing because there are claims some were tenants of one of the shops,” said a senior officer aware of the probe.
Police say the attackers seem to know the shop well because of the manner in which they have engaged them. The probe may however, take long given the police must investigate all tenants.
The mall was among those that had been previously targeted.
In July last year, two Iranian terror suspects were arraigned on accusations of possessing explosives.
Ahmed Mohamud and Said Mausud had been found with 15 kilogrammes of RDX explosives.
International media quoted an Israeli minister who said the two Iranians had planned to attack Israeli, American, British or Saudi targets inside Kenya.
Westgate Shopping Mall is one of several Israeli-owned businesses in Kenya.
The issue was was discussed at a special National Security Advisory Committee meeting ( NSAC) held in Nairobi on Sunday.
The NSAC, which was chaired by Secretary to the Cabinet Francis Kimemia, advises various security agencies on the way forward on security matters. The committee met following the terror attack at the Westgate Shopping Mall, which has killed more than 60 people and left hundreds of others wounded.
After they received the threats, the officers are said to have shared them with major shopping malls, tall commercial buildings and other installations that are usually at risk of mass attacks.
Sources said securities manning these installations are usually asked to beef up their security as a way of containing or deterring planned attacks.
Westgate Shopping Mall was among the installations that were informed of the plans and urged to beef up their security.
But the gunmen seem to have decided to arrive and strike on foot. Instead of gaining access in vehicles, they struck while walking in.
Westgate is a premier complex usually frequented by wealthy locals and expatriates and is usually busiest during weekends. It is one of the many malls that have come up in Nairobi and the country. The six-year-old shopping centre is located on Mwanzi Road in Westlands, near Sarit Centre, and UKay Centre.

Mogadishu, Somalia - Al-Shabab - the al-Qaeda-linked Somali-based group - has claimed responsibility for an attack in the Kenyan capital Nairobi.
The attack launched on Saturday on the upscale Westgate shopping mall has killed at least 62 people and wounded more than 150 others. Heavy gunfire continued to ring out on Monday.
Al Jazeera's Hamza Mohamed interviewed al-Shabab's spokesman for military operations, Sheikh Abulaziz Abu Muscab, as the siege at the mall entered its third day. Abulaziz spoke about why the group attacked Nairobi now. He also provided insight into al-Shabab's relations with the Mombasa Youth Centre, a group the Kenyan government designated as a terrorist organisation.
Sheikh Abulaziz Abu Muscab, al-Shabab military operations spokesman
Al Jazeera: It is more than two years since Kenyan troops went into Somalia to fight al-Shabab. Why did al-Shabab attack Nairobi now?
Sheikh Abulaziz Abu Muscab: We have been late in attacking Nairobi. We did not attack before because they were expecting us to attack. Our aim is to attack our enemy when they least expect us to attack. This time they were not expecting us to attack. We choose when to attack, and best time to attack.
AJ: Is this al-Shabab's first attack in Nairobi?
SA: Thats not the importing thing. The important thing is it is us who attacked now. It is not important to say we attacked before or not.
AJ: This attack is happening at Westgate Mall, which, when the attack started, was full of shoppers. Why is al-Shabab attacking a place that is full of civilians?
SA: The place we attacked is Westgate shopping mall. It is a place where tourists from across the world come to shop, where diplomats gather. It is a place where Kenya's decision-makers go to relax and enjoy themselves. Westgate is a place where there are Jewish and American shops. So we have to attack them.
On civilian deaths, Kenya should first be asked why they bombed innocent Somali civilians in refugee camps, why they bombed innocent people in Gedo and Jubba regions. They should be asked that first before us.
AJ: Al-Shabab claims to work to protect Muslims and Somalis in particular. Some of the people killed in this attack suggests otherwise.
SA: History supports our claim. We are the only ones protecting Somalis and Somalia. We are the only group fighting Somalia's historic enemies. We are the only one who can say "no" to Somalis' enemies.
On the loss of lives, there were Kenyan soldiers firing back at our fighters. There was an exchange of gunfire. There is no evidence it was our bullets that killed them.

We released all Muslims when we took control of the mall. Witnesses have backed us on this.
AJ: Do you think this attack will make Kenya withdraw its troops from Somalia?
SA: That question is not for us to answer. That is for the Kenyan government to answer. It is up to them to withdraw their soldiers or not. If they don't withdraw, attacks like this will become common in Kenya. It is possible if they don't withdraw attacks like this will happen in Kenyan cities and towns every day.
AJ: Before Kenyan troops went into Somalia in October 2011, what was al-Shabab's relation with the Kenyan government?
SA: We always knew Kenya is the enemy of the Somali people. We knew this when we controlled the border towns. Kenya invading us was not unexpected. We don't believe them and we dont trust them.
AJ: Kenya says it will go after the perpetrators of this attack and won't stop until they are defeated. What do you say to that?
SA: We are not perpetrators. We are only defending ourselves and defending our rights, the rights of the Somali people.
Today no one has a worse criminal record than the Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta. He's talking about tens of people killed at Westgate while he's responsible for the deaths of thousands of people killed when he was running for the presidency. If Kenyans want to hold someone accountable for crimes they should first start with him.
AJ: Many, including the Somali and Kenyan governments, are saying al-Shabab targeting a place full of civilians is a sign of weakness, that al-Shabab is on the back foot and will soon be history. Is that the case?
SA: Whom are these people judging us? These people's weakness is public for everyone to see. The Somali government is protected by tanks for them to stay in power. The Kenyans rely on foreign support, even to deal with a small matter like Westgate. They asked for Western support.
AJ: Finally, Kenya has designated the Mombasa Youth Centre (MYC) as a terrorist organisation. The group has on many occasions endorsed al-Shabab. What is al-Shabab's relationship with MYC?
SA: The relations between MYC and us are the same relations between Muslims. They are our Muslim brothers. Islam is our common relation, and they have the same right from us like any other Muslim
