Gangsters shot dead one of the lawyers representing Musikari Kombo in an election petition against Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang'ula.
The lawyer, Mr Wanyama Wanyonyi, was shot dead after he alighted from his car to open the gate to his home at Sunrise Estate in Bungoma town shortly after midnight.
Neighbours said they heard gunshots and went to check only to find the lawyer lying in a pool of blood outside his gate.
He had multiple gunshot wounds and died on the spot. Nothing was stolen from him.
Wanyama represented Kombo in the petition alongside lawyer Alfred Ndambiri.
The court is set to rule on the petition on September 30.
Western provincial police boss Mr Alfred Ombaba confirmed the incident saying police have launched investigations into the matter.
He said police recovered three spent cartridges fired from an AK 47 rifle at the scene.
The wife to the deceased Mrs Barbra Wanyama said she was called by a neighbor who told her that her husband had been attacked.
“Nothing was stolen from him. Sh10,000 that he had was intact and his Smartphone was also at the scene,” she said.
Bungoma Governor Mr Kenneth Lusaka accompanied by former Justice Minister Eugene Wamalwa and Kombo who is former Webuye MP visited the family.
Mr Kombo said it Is hard to see people around him losing their lives.
Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula condemned the killing said crime in Bungoma County was on the rise.
“The county has lost many lives. Many people have been disabled and property lost through uncontrolled criminal activity. I condemn in the strongest terms possible the shooting of lawyer Wanyama and urge security agencies to carry out thorough investigations and ensure perpetrators of heinous crime are apprehended and made to feel the full force of law,” Mr Wetangula said on phone.
He added: “This attack and loss of life of lawyer Wanyama is one too many for our county and cannot be accepted or tolerated.”
Mr Wetangula sent a message of condolence to the bereaved family and assured them he “will do anything possible within my competence to assist in getting into the bottom of this.”

The killers did not act alone. They were hired and they can be bought. A bounty need to be established and the real killer will be known

Poleni sana. How many counties included in their budgets allocation of resources to boost security in their counties? In spite of the fact that the county leaders already have good perks including allowances for big personal cars and personal security, all they were interested in were more cars for members of their assemblies, money for travelling and stipends and big houses for the Governors. When the head of security gave the "shoot to kill" order for criminals the other day, many Kenyans opposed the idea. Haya sasa, we can continue sympathising with the criminals as they do what they know best, killing innocent people going about their daily lives. There's another Kenyan family that has lost a breadwinner.

This is political assassination. The culprits are not 'thugs' as purported. The intention was to shoot & kill Peter. Kenya police & CID at Bungoma, please get to the bottom of this. Too sad that our society hosts these kind of ruthless individuals, whoever they be. Peter's blood is on their hands for those who planned and carried out the murder. To the family of the deceased; poleni sana for the loss of a husband, father, son, bother, cousin, friend & or neighbor. RIP dear cousin.

The politics of Bungoma is full of witchcraft, threats, murder and the like. Bungoma, resist all these temptations and the devil will flee from you. Also, be accommodative to other tribes. Your neighbour Trans Nzoia always has some semblance of peace in the midst of turmoil emanating from its neighbours in the North Rift and Western largely due to its cosmopolitan nature and tolerance.

Yet another really sad story - what has the world come to? Road accidents have claimed more people this week. Then there has been the navy base shootings in the USA.
Bungoma has been in the news a lot. Were the perpetrators of the 'war' and killings after the March elections ever found? Have the nurses who kicked a mother on the floor been locked up?
Whereas it is a very sad and unfortunate thing for Kombo's lawyer to have been killed last night, it is irresponsible for us, on here, to swiftly jump to conclusions by declaring that it definitely was politically motivated.
How do we know? Indeed - the heading of this article does serve to agitate our passions. However, let's give room to investigations to be done. Sad.
