A spokesman for Uganda's Interior Ministry says an American journalist who was arrested while filming an opposition rally will be deported for working in Uganda without proper documentation.
Spokesman Benjamin Kagiremire said Friday that Taylor Krauss — who has been in detention since Tuesday — would be given what he called "an organized departure."
Krauss, who described himself as an independent documentary filmmaker, said he was arrested while filming a violent confrontation between police and supporters of Kizza Besigye, the leader of Uganda's protest movement.
Police have mounted a crackdown on protest rallies in the capital and restricted the movements of officials, including the mayor of Kampala.
Some activists are trying to spark a wider political movement against President Yoweri Museveni who has held power for 27 years.
